All championship matches at the First Annual Southeast Texas Academic Challenge were close games, and all featured Houston schools. All but one of the finalists were private schools. In the High School JV division, John Cooper School outscored St. John’s 155-120.

In the Middle School competition, Presbyterian School captured the title with a nifty 9-0 record, edging St. Laurence Catholic School on the last question, 170-155.
In the High School Varsity division, public school Klein High made the playoffs by the skin of their teeth, seeded last with a 4-2 record, but upset Bellaire A in the quarterfinals, overcame Klein Collins in the semifinals, and faced St. John’s in the finals. This contest also went down to the last question, with Klein winning it, 205-190.
